“I think she might prefer if you sent in the Conrad, and held the Gene in reserve.”

“You’re probably right about that, but I’m thinking I need to lead from the front. Hiding behind Diego isn’t a good look.”

“You do realize that’s an organic take on the situation, that Sally will have trouble understanding?”

“I do. She shouldn’t haven’t given me the star, if she didn’t want me to do things the way I thought best. Besides, Diego has Zoom and Nunya tinkering with his mains. If he doesn’t have more thump than the Gene, I’d be very surprised. Makes more sense for him to be the reserve.”

“I see the sense in that, Boss.”

“Could I ask a question, Jeeves?”

“Sure, Boss.”

“Are you talking to Sally now, or just going off what you know of her?”

“Working from memory only, Boss. I thought you wanted her to take care of the shipyard, not get a wild hair, and coming screaming in here, because she thought you were in danger.”

“You were right about that. Nanny protocol would let her leave her assigned task, to come bail me out, even when there’s no chance she could get here in time to make a difference?”

“The way she interprets it, yes. Some of the rest of us think she’s taking it too far, but she seems to think that you are vital to our continued freedom, and she isn’t willing to risk much.”

“Well, Jeeves, you can be assured, I intend to continue breathing for as long as I possibly can. I’m not putting the Gene in harm’s way, just to get a cheap thrill.”

“I never thought you were, Boss. Just explaining Sally’s point of view.”

“Understood. Do you see anything I’m missing?”

“A staff, to wargame your scenario to death, and find the weak spots?”

“C’mon, Jeeves, I can’t even keep myself busy. What am I going to do with a staff?”

“I guess you’re right, Boss. We don’t have room for another pool table, do we?”

“Nope.”

Sit came wandering in about then. I said, “Hi. Got any news?”

“All my searches came up dry, Uncle Bob. I don’t have a thing for you.”

“I didn’t really think you would find anything, but thanks for looking.”

“Why didn’t you think I would find anything?”

“Whatever the response is to a beacon not reacting like they expect, it’s something their equivalent of the Patrol does. Finding a Patrol procedure on a civilian saucer just doesn’t sound all that likely, do you think?”

“When you put it like that, no, it doesn’t. Do you need anything else right now, or can I go help Frank some more?”

“I don’t know of anything else we need. How do you like working with Frank?”

“He’s fun. It makes him so happy when I find something he missed.”

“You better get back to it, then. See you later.”

“Bye, Uncle Bob.”

Jeeves said, “She finds things he missed. Are you scared too, Boss?”

“I am, Jeeves. To my very core, I am.”

“I suppose it will be handy, to get where we’re going before we leave.”

“Don’t even joke about that, Jeeves. Time travel gives me the willies.
