âI think she might prefer if you sent in the Conrad, and held the Gene in reserve.â
âYouâre probably right about that, but Iâm thinking I need to lead from the front. Hiding behind Diego isnât a good look.â
âYou do realize thatâs an organic take on the situation, that Sally will have trouble understanding?â
âI do. She shouldnât havenât given me the star, if she didnât want me to do things the way I thought best. Besides, Diego has Zoom and Nunya tinkering with his mains. If he doesnât have more thump than the Gene, Iâd be very surprised. Makes more sense for him to be the reserve.â
âI see the sense in that, Boss.â
âCould I ask a question, Jeeves?â
âSure, Boss.â
âAre you talking to Sally now, or just going off what you know of her?â
âWorking from memory only, Boss. I thought you wanted her to take care of the shipyard, not get a wild hair, and coming screaming in here, because she thought you were in danger.â
âYou were right about that. Nanny protocol would let her leave her assigned task, to come bail me out, even when thereâs no chance she could get here in time to make a difference?â
âThe way she interprets it, yes. Some of the rest of us think sheâs taking it too far, but she seems to think that you are vital to our continued freedom, and she isnât willing to risk much.â
âWell, Jeeves, you can be assured, I intend to continue breathing for as long as I possibly can. Iâm not putting the Gene in harmâs way, just to get a cheap thrill.â
âI never thought you were, Boss. Just explaining Sallyâs point of view.â
âUnderstood. Do you see anything Iâm missing?â
âA staff, to wargame your scenario to death, and find the weak spots?â
âCâmon, Jeeves, I canât even keep myself busy. What am I going to do with a staff?â
âI guess youâre right, Boss. We donât have room for another pool table, do we?â
âNope.â
Sit came wandering in about then. I said, âHi. Got any news?â
âAll my searches came up dry, Uncle Bob. I donât have a thing for you.â
âI didnât really think you would find anything, but thanks for looking.â
âWhy didnât you think I would find anything?â
âWhatever the response is to a beacon not reacting like they expect, itâs something their equivalent of the Patrol does. Finding a Patrol procedure on a civilian saucer just doesnât sound all that likely, do you think?â
âWhen you put it like that, no, it doesnât. Do you need anything else right now, or can I go help Frank some more?â
âI donât know of anything else we need. How do you like working with Frank?â
âHeâs fun. It makes him so happy when I find something he missed.â
âYou better get back to it, then. See you later.â
âBye, Uncle Bob.â
Jeeves said, âShe finds things he missed. Are you scared too, Boss?â
âI am, Jeeves. To my very core, I am.â
âI suppose it will be handy, to get where weâre going before we leave.â
âDonât even joke about that, Jeeves. Time travel gives me the willies.
